During the Thursday night show, the 24-year-old Barbadian beauty
collected her Video of the Year award, then exited the stage and was
returning to her seat when Brown, 23, stopped her to congratulate her.
There in front of the Staples Center audience — and MTV's cameras — they
not only greeted each other but also shared a kiss.
Yes, a kiss.
Nobody but the two of them knows exactly what that kiss meant. And
Brown has a girlfriend — Karrueche Tran, who is presumably very patient —
so one would assume it wasn't romantic. But to see Rihanna kiss Brown
just two weeks after telling Oprah Winfrey that he is the "love of her life" and that she still loves him made for a loaded moment.
The moment also included Brown, in a gray suit, holding Rihanna — who
was sporting a new, shorter hairstyle — in an embrace for a moment. He
gave her a hug — their matching star neck tattoos showing — and put his
hands around her waist and held them there until she started walking
back to her seat.
Public reaction to the kiss on Twitter has been all over the place. @ErikaLauren was
pretty blunt with her feelings, writing, "Can't stand Rihanna. If a guy
punched me in the face, I would never speak to him again. She's a
moron." And @LewisMeagor posted, "Dear Rihanna: chris brown will
'probably' hit you again." However, not every comment was negative.
@MarieLouise_1 tweeted a more neutral statement, "They really need to
stop frontin and just get back together. What y'all think????" There
were also many enthusiastic responses from some people hoping the kiss
was the first step to a reunion between the two. "I
seen some promising pictures of Chris Brown and Rihanna! I'd be more
excited if they got back together than I would if it was my mum &
dad!" tweeted @AlexandraTweet.
It seems that everyone has an opinion, something Rihanna is well
aware of. In her interview with Oprah, she addressed her critics, who
were disappointed that she would let Brown back into her life. "I have
to move on. I have forgiven him. It took me a long time. I was angry for
a long time," she said. "I can't tell people how to feel about it.
They're entitled to feel angry, because it wasn't a good thing that
happened. But I have forgiven him."
