Wenger urged by Arsenal legend to sign a 'world star'

Robin van Persie

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown insists the Gunners will bounce back from the loss of wantaway captain Robin Van Persie - but he has called on Arsene Wenger to sign another 'world star' to boost their title chances.
Some have suggested that van Persie’s desire to leave could affect the Gunners’ start to the season in the same way that the protracted transfers of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas did last term.
But Keown, who won three league titles during his time in north London, is confident that Arsenal won’t repeat the mistakes of last season.
We’re almost kind of getting used to losing top players now, it’s just a shame that so many are going— Martin Keown
"At least van Persie has come out early and declared that he wants to leave," said Keown.
"Last year when it was Nasri and Fabregas it impacted so much on the group that when they were seven games in it was like a relegation fight. And I think this round this won’t happen if van Persie goes. I think the squad is stronger both mentally and in quality."
However, Keown, speaking at a BT London Live event in Hyde Park, feels Wenger must also invest in a world-class player while bemoaning the constant departures of top players from the club.
He added: "We’re almost kind of getting used to losing top players now, it’s just a shame that so many are going.
"If we look back to Dennis Bergkamp coming to the club, when he came to the club, it was kind of like ‘Christ!’ That was a real wake-up call - he came in, everyone took note, Arsenal’s going in a different direction. Arsenal could almost do with one of those world stars coming in again."

Ruiz determined to make mark at Fulham

Fulham striker Bryan Ruiz is determined to make his mark at the club

Fulham forward Bryan Ruiz admits he is desperate to stay at Craven Cottage and regain his best form next season.
Ruiz struggled to show any consistency in his first season in English football following his £10.6m move from FC Twente last summer and only managed two goals in 30 appearances.
There have been question marks over his long-term future with the west London club, but the Costa Rica international is determined to silence his critics and become a major star in the Premier League.
Ruiz said: "I think there is more to come. I know that the manager has talked about me making a greater contribution and that he has faith that I can. Is that pressure? I don't think so.
"It is exactly what I want to hear because I came to England to show my qualities. If I am honest, I believe that it has taken me a little while to find my feet.
"Having had almost a year to adjust to the culture, the team, the manager and my team-mates, I feel that I have a lot more confidence.
"I am enjoying pre-season and I feel good. I want to be an important player for the club and one that can make a difference. It's nice that people believe that I can do it - so I want to show that I can."

Great Britain 1-0 Brazil: Houghton makes history in front of record crowd

Great Britain players celebrate Steph Houghton's strike

Steph Houghton secured arguably the finest result in the history British women's football as Hope Powell's side stormed into the Olympic quarter-finals by beating Brazil at Wembley in front of a British record 70,584 crowd.
In pure statistical terms, Houghton's third goal of the tournament meant Kelly Smith could afford to miss a second half penalty and GB still managed to avoid a last eight meeting with World Cup winners Japan.
Instead they must play Canada, no slouches themselves as the seventh-ranked nation in the world, in Coventry on Friday.
Within two minutes, they were in front after Brazil’s defence failed to clear an early corner allowing Karen Carney to chase down a loose ball, turn and then thread a pass through a posse of opposition players.
Houghton read it brilliantly, nipped past Andreia and from the tightest of angles and rolled in. It was Houghton's third goal of the competition and the noise that greeted it was amazing.
Brazil rallied, Renata Costa belted a long-range free-kick over, Karen Bardsley denied Cristiane, then skipper Marta.
GB tried to release the pressure but it was the second-half before they created chances of their own.
Unmarked, in a central position, Little should have scored with a firm header which went straight to Andreia.
Then Eniola Aluko found a bit of space on the right of the area, only to slash her shot wide.
When Aluko was tripped by Francielle, Kelly Smith had the responsibility of converting from the spot. But the pressure was too great and a poor spot-kick was turned away by Andreia.
Against opposition of such strength, moments like that can often be pivotal and a previously becalmed Brazil were reignited but Bardsley was equally inspired, turning away an ambitious effort from Marta with her feet as GB held on to claim the win.

Football premier-league: Exclusive - Dicks urges Carroll to become a West Ham hero | Radio talkSPORT

Julian Dicks has urged Andy Carroll to join West Ham and put his Liverpool nightmare behind him.

The Reds accepted a season-long loan bid from the east Londoners, believed to be worth around £2million, for the England striker on Monday evening.
The Hammers face competition from former club Newcastle for the hitman's services though, a move which is believed to be favoured by the 23-year-old.

He wasn’t a prolific goalscorer but he added another dimension to the team [during his time at Liverpool]— Julian Dicks

But former Irons favourite Dicks believes Carroll has the credentials to be a success at the Boleyn Ground.
“Andy Carroll’s a good player,” he told the Sports Bar. “He’d be a good asset for West Ham.
“He’s perfectly made for West Ham. He’s a big lad, he holds the ball up well and he’s aggressive.
“He did really well at Newcastle and he’d do well at West Ham. The fans would love him at Upton Park.
"He might not have had the best time at Liverpool but he did very well with Newcastle.
"In the games I watched him play for Liverpool he did well. He wasn’t a prolific goalscorer but he added another dimension to the team."

Everton complete deal to re-sign Pienaar

  • Everton have completed the signing of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham

Everton have confirmed the permanent return of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham for £4.5million on a four-year deal.
The South Africa international spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park after failing to impress under then-Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.
He only signed for Tottenham last year for a reported £3million fee after spending four years, the first of which was on loan from Borussia Dortmund, with Everton.
He told evertontv: "I am happy to be here. It took a few weeks to sort out but I am delighted to be back and excited to play for Everton.
"There was no doubt in my mind that I would be back here. At the end of the season I told the manager how I felt and I am happy now it is all done."

YouTube Tallies 4 Mil Creative Commons-Licensed Videos

http://atlantablackstar.comYouTube topped all records today by tallying up 4 million Creative Commons-licensed videos in its trove — more than any other video hosting company in the world.
This means that users have literally millions of choices for snipping bits of footage, adding scenes, and building onto videos they’re making. Everything in this collection comes branded with the Creative Commons Attribution license, meaning users don’t have to get explicit permission to use the content from the creators.
YouTube launched its Creative Commons video library last year and since then it said its users have added in “40 years’ worth of video.” Much of the content is from well-known media distributors, such as C-SPAN, Voice of America, and Al Jazeera.
Here’s what Creative Commons CEO Cathy Casserly wrote on YouTube’s blog today:
Do you need a professional opening for your San Francisco vacation video? Perhaps some gorgeous footage of the moon for your science project? How about a squirrel eating a walnut to accompany your hot new dubstep track? All of this and more is available to inspire and add to your unique creation. Thanks to CC BY, it’s easy to borrow footage from other people’s videos and insert it into your own, because the license grants you the specific permissions to do so as long as you give credit to the original creator.
You can pass on the creative spirit when you publish your video, by choosing the option to license it under CC BY so that others can reuse and remix your footage with the YouTube Video Editor. This is where the fun really starts. Imagine seeing your footage used by a student in Mumbai, a filmmaker in Mexico City, or a music video director in Detroit. By letting other people play with your videos, you let them into a global sandbox…

Amber Rose continues to spark pregnancy rumors!

http://mrsgrapevine.comIs Amber Rose sporting a baby bump?

A little over a month ago, Amber said she’d be putting her own music career on hold because she and hubby-to-be were in love and talking about having kids.  No sooner than she said that did we see them walking through the airport and Amber had on a dress that didn’t show off any of her curves – quite unusual for her.  I officially added her to my list  but sometimes people gain weight and women, in particular, can be sensitive about it so you don’t want to be offensive.
But there might be something to this baby rumor. Amber has not dyed her hair in months (from what I understand, dye is no good for the system when you’re pregnant), she has a ginger ale by the pool instead of her normal cocktail (yes, that’s really her above) and…well, look at her stomach.  Even at Amber’s biggest weight, her stomach remained pretty flat.  I’m thinking there might be a little Wamber (Wiz/Amber…too much? Too corny) on the way in a few months.
Neither Wiz nor Amber have said anything about this but Amber’s very in tune with the “internet streets” so I’m sure she knows the buzz about her.

Schools paralysed

By The Citizen Team
Dateline. Learning was paralysed in most of public schools yesterday as about 90 percent of teachers staged a countrywide strike to demand a pay rise. Not even processions by their students would soften the hearts of the angry teachers.

But the government was just as steadfast in its resolve, warning the teachers that action would be taken against those who took part in the outlawed strike.  The Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, told a hastily convened press conference in his Dar es Salaam office that the government will withhold the salaries of all teachers who take part in the boycott.

Leaders of the Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) moved fast to calm their members, advising them that no one will be penalised for not going to work because their strike met all the legal requirements.

The TTU secretary, Mr Ezekiah Oluoch, told a radio station yesterday evening they have tried to discuss their demands with the powers-that-be for a long time but the government officials have been elusive. Reports countrywide indicated that most headteachers reported for work. In Morogoro, the deputy minister for Education carried out a door to door inspection of schools and discovered first hand at Morogoro secondary school that 45 teachers had stayed at home.

But some public secondary school teachers went to work, especially in Dar es Salaam. It was business as usual at Kisutu Girls Secondary school, Zanaki and Azania as a substantial number of teachers reported for work.
“We have so far been taught two subjects as shown on our timetable,” said Leah Njama, a second form student at Kisutu. “Our teachers have come to work and they are teaching as usual.”

Another Kisutu student, Victoria Njaka, told journalists: “I have heard about teachers going on strike from today, but I haven’t seen such action here at our school.”

In Rufiji District, 831 out of 1,129 teachers affiliated to TTU stayed at home.  The TTU chairman in the district, Mr Mohamedi Mbagalo, said that they support the strike because the TTU’s demands are genuine.
The teachers are asking for a 100 per cent salary rise and 50 per cent of their salaries as allowances for arts teachers and 55 percent for science teachers. They also want a hardship allowance of 30 per cent of their pay. Rufiji District has a total of 1,342 teachers but 69 of them are not TTU members.

In Dodoma, Regional Commissioner Rehema Nchimbi urged teachers to carry on with their work and declared that the TTU strike was illegal. Teachers have no basis to strike, Dr Nchimbi said, because their demands are the subject of a pending court case.

But the president of TTU, Mr Gratian Mukoba, said all legal requirements had been met and the strike was legal. The Commission for Mediation and Arbitration failed to resolve the case and issued them with a certificate to that effect, he added, upon which they gave 48 hours’ notice as required by law.

“We have observed section 80(1) and other subsections in calling this strike.... we have no court order which outlaws our strike...therefore, saying the strike is illegal is baseless,” he said.

Mr Mukoba dismissed the government’s argument that it does not have enough money to meet the teachers’ demands. The country had enough money and the only shortcoming was setting its priorities right, he said. Besides, he argued, the government has been able to raise money for other agendas and appears to discover it is broke only when teachers demand their rights.

Still, he said TTU was open for negotiations on how the stalemate could be resolved. “We believe that the government can meet our demands if it sets its priorities right because it has enough money,” he added.
The Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (Tucta) secretary general, Mr Nicholaus Mgaya, yesterday declared support for the striking teachers and said their demands were valid.

“The government should stop the habit of running to the court when workers demand their rights,” he added. “It should work at solving the problems.”
Reported by Bernard Lugongo (Dar), Amini Yasini (Rufiji) and  Masoud Masasi, Faridah Msabah (Dodoma).

Dating tips for long-distance relationships

Dating tips for long-distance relationships
Whether you're married or just starting a new relationship, being in a long-distance relationship can be challenging. You want to find ways to stay connected to each other as well as keep the romance alive, even though there are many miles between you. Here are some tips on how to keep a long-distance relationship fresh and exciting.

DO'S AND DON’TS FOR LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS

Do stay connected, but don’t drown your long-distance lover in an abundance of texts, emails and phone calls.  Make up a schedule for appropriate times to call each other so you don’t risk interrupting each other and having to cut calls short. Cute, loving texts are great, but don’t send so many that your beau’s phone is beeping every second of the day.
Don’t feel that every moment of your time has to be somehow connected to your long distance love. Do make time for yourself, eat right, exercise, work on your hobby and go out with friends so you have fresh, new topics when you do get a chance to talk to each other.

DATE IDEAS FOR LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS

Do have a romantic dinner together. You both can bring home your favorite meal, set up your computers to Skype or use your webcams, light a candle and eat dinner and visit just as though you were both in the same room. Or rent the same movie and watch it at the same time while you chat online or talk on the phone.  Another fun idea would be for one of you to go to a local tourist spot like a museum, zoo or historic site, take pictures with your phone and send them to the other person with descriptions of what you're seeing. These are great ways to share time together and still stay connected.

WAYS TO SPICE UP YOUR LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP

Staying connected emotionally and physically is the most difficult part of being in a long-distance relationship. Ladies, do try calling your boyfriend right before bedtime to have an intimate chat as you drift off to sleep. And for you guys -- do surprise your girlfriend with an intimate gift like lingerie or a sexy dress and let her model it for you in photos or during your online chat time. Or download your girlfriend’s favorite love songs onto a CD and send it to her along with flowers. She'll have only happy thoughts of you every time she listens to the romantic CD.

Lissu names three ‘dirty’ MPs

 Citizen Reporter
Dodoma. As the debate on alleged corrupt MPs continued unabated in and outside Parliament, the official opposition in the august House has gone public with seven names.Addressing a press conference here yesterday, Opposition Chief Whip Tundu Lissu said all the seven MPs in his lists were members of the parliamentary committee for Energy and Minerals.

He said there was clear conflict of interest among the said MPs and that, according to the Public Leadership Code of Ethics Act of 1995, public officials are obliged to declare interest whenever they get involved in any business.
Mr Lissu mentioned Mr Charles Mwijage (Muleba North-CCM), Nasri Abdallah (Korogwe Urban-CCM) and Ms Marium Kisangi (Special Seats-CCM) as among MPs who have conflict of interests  in Tanesco business operation.
He noted that Mr Mwijage is said to being consultant with the Puma energy company, the very firm that won a tender to supply Tanesco with crude oil.

He said since the MP was a consultant with Puma, which was competing for a tender with other companies, it would have been difficult for him to avoid supporting it in the bidding process.“According to ethics and law, which guide Parliament, it is not right for such a person to be a member of that committee; it is obvious he has a conflict of interests in the matter,” argued Mr Lissu. On Ms Kisangi, the Chief Whip said his office has discovered that the MP owns the petrol station and she was involved in fuel business.

“We have evidence Ms Kisangi owns a petrol station and since she is doing such kind of business, it is obvious there is a conflict of interest because she is also a member of the House Energy committee, which oversee the same business,” said Mr Lissu.

He revealed further that Mr Nasri Abdallah was another MP who owns oil companies in the country and that being a member of the Energy and Minerals Committee was improper because he was likely to use his position to influence the provision of the tender to some company of his choice.

He said other two MPs who are also members of the committee were the main suppliers of tyres to Tanesco. He said it was difficult for them to take Tanesco to task while they were among people who pull it down with sub-standards supplies.
When asked about the allegation on one of Chadema MP, Mr Lissu said Parliament should investigate all other committees, which are accused of the fraud and that the Opposition and Chadema in particular would act appropriately against any MP who might be found guilty.

“We do not entertain nonsense, if anyone will be found guilty, Chadema will take serious measures against him or her,” said Mr Lissu.

Last week the minister for energy and minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, told Parliament some members of the parliamentary committee for Energy and Minerals are tyre suppliers to Tanesco.“… and their tyres are below standard and their prices are quite high,” Professor Muhongo told an attentive House.
According to Mr Lissu, a Special Seats MP in the list is said to be having personal relationship with one of top officials in the ministry of Energy and Minerals while another lawmaker is alleged to be lobbyist for two oil companies, which were competing for tenders.

When reached for comment, some of the MPs mentioned in the opposition list said the claims were insignificant because they were transparent in everything they do.
Ms Marium Kisangi confirmed to The Citizen that it was true she owns the said fuel station and that hers was a family business.

“ I was a Mianzini Primary School headteacher before becoming MP, my husband is a retired civil servant, and my firstborn son has no other job except supervising this business, I have nothing to do this scandal,” said Ms Kisangi.
When asked about the violation of the Public Leadership Code of Ethics Act of 1995, the MP said the Code is against an MP who does business clandestinely; she wasn’t.

“I am transparent in my businesses, I declared my interest before the Ethics Committee, and they even wrote a letter of commendation to me recently,” she explained.
For his part, Mr Mwijage commented that his position in the committee was very crucial since he was considered an expert in the oil sector.

“I have been working for oil companies for more than 28 years, therefore my responsibilities in the committee include to advise and offer professional advice whenever it is needed,” said Mr Mwijage.
According to him, the opposition should avoid misinterpreting the matter, and instead they should concentrate on fighting corruption and not focusing on a few individuals.

Mr Nasri Abdallah could not say anything rather than asking this journalist to hang up his phone.
“Please don’t waste my time,” said Mr Abdallah.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Job Ndugai told MPs that the Chair hasn’t any list of any tainted legislators.
He said the committee welcomes MPs who have knowledge on the matter to assist it with crucial information.
Moreover, Mr Ndugai informed the House that a team of Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) was already interrogating some MPs on the matter.

Lamar Odom’s Breath Almost Made Kim Kardashian Throw Up

http://noahfairbanks.comKim Kardashian turned up the dramatics on a recent episode of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” Kim revealed to her sister Khloe, that her husband, Lamar Odom, seriously needed to visit the dentist because his breath was so acrid, it almost made her throw up!
In fact, she pondered how Khloe could even stand to kiss him! Lamar, who is frightened by the idea of a dentist working on his mouth, refused to go to one. After careful persuasion, Odom took the plunge to get to the root (pun intended) of the problem.

Paris Hilton parties in St. Tropez

Paris Hilton has been having fun in St. Tropez (Splash News)When you're rich and famous, spending the summer in the Hamptons or Malibu just seems so pedestrian these days. Any real celebrity worth her weight in Christian Louboutins knows the place to be is a sun-drenched spot in Europe. Over just the last six weeks we've seen Naomi Campbell dancing through the streets of Southern Italy, Ryan Seacrest yachting around the French Riviera, Jessica Alba tweeting from a lounge chair on the Amalfi Coast, and Kim K. and Kanye hitting up Fashion Week in Paris.
Now we can add Paris Hilton to the list of jet-setting celebs jaunting around Europe during the warm-weather months. The gazillionaire hotel heiress was spotted over the weekend partying in the ritzy vacation hot spot of St. Tropez, France, with sister, Nicky. And she clearly wasn't looking to stay out of the spotlight, donning a long and flowy belted swim coverup, a glitzy one piece, giant floppy hat, oversized shades, black flats, and a leather purse with a bright green skull on it. The 31-year-old trekked across the sand at the swanky beach club Le Club 55 while having an animated conversation on her cell phone before hopping into a dinghy, which took her, Nicky, and a gaggle of pals including cousin Whitney Davis (daughter of Paris' aunt and "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Kim Richards) to a waiting yacht.

Paris kept friends and fans abreast of her non-stop water activities and club-going, tweeting on Saturday: "Such a fun day today! Swimming, jet skiing, getting tan. Then lunch at 55 then pool party at Nikki Beach! I love St Tropez!" She followed up with another update on Sunday: "Had fun dinner with @Whittles2 (cousin Davis) at The Byblos Hotel. Then danced the night away at Les Caves Du Roy. Partying St Tropez style! #YES!"

Arnold Schwarzenegger turns 65: the five biggest media-making moments in his wild life

Arnold Schwarzenegger turns 65 on July 30. (Marc Piasecki/Getty Images)Arnold Schwarzenegger has come a long way since he emigrated from Austria to follow an unprecedented path that took him from Austrian immigrant to bodybuilding champ to action-movie superstar to California governor. And, over the years, he's made plenty of headlines, both good and bad. To mark his 65th birthday on July 30, we take a look at his biggest and most unbelievable media-making moments.
Schwarzenegger in his bodybuilding days. (Getty Images) He makes bodybuilding history … and later admits to getting a little help
Quick, name a few of the world's top bodybuilders. Exactly. It's pretty hard to make a career out of pumping iron, let alone use it as a vehicle to become world-famous, but Arnold Schwarzenegger was the man who managed to do it. After leaving his native Austria for the United States, a very ripped Schwarzenegger became the world's youngest Mr. Olympia in 1970 at age 23. By 1975, he was going for his sixth shot at the title when he was approached to be the subject of a documentary titled "Pumping Iron," (which also featured future "Incredible Hulk" star Lou Ferrigno). The film would give America a look inside the world of bodybuilding and introduce them to Schwarzenegger, changing his life forever and putting him on a path to fame. He later admitted to using steroids back then (though apparently in smaller doses than is typically used today), but has said he has no regrets. "At that time, it was something new that came on the market, and we went to the doctor and did it under doctors' supervision," Schwarzenegger told ABC News in 2005. "We were experimenting with it. It was a new thing. So you can't roll the clock back and say, 'Now I would change my mind on this.'" Over the years, the actor has sued both a doctor and a tabloid for making claims that his steroid was responsible for heart problems (which he claims he doesn't have) and would lead to an early death.

He becomes an unlikely mega-star
After starring in a few movies and TV series in the late '70s (in addition to "Pumping Iron"), a 31-year-old Schwarzenegger was cast as the lead in the big budget "Conan the Barbarian," an action film that became a box-office success and would catapult the beefy guy with the funny accent to a wildly successful acting career. When, in 1984's "The Terminator," Schwarzenegger uttered the now-famous line "I'll be back," he meant it. The actor would star in a whopping 20-plus action films over two decades, in addition to some blockbuster comedies like "Kindergarten Cop" and "Twins." The pressure was on when Schwarzenegger returned for "Terminator 2," which was given a then-record-breaking budget of nearly $100 million. The investment was worth it as the sequel grossed a staggering $600 million worldwide, proving Schwarzenegger had a special kind of box-office appeal and establishing the Austrian native as an American action-movie icon.

He marries a Kennedy
Arnold Schwarzennegger and Maria Shriver's most-recent headlines may have been centered around their split, but back in the '80s, the couple created buzz simply by being together. When the world found out a one-time beefy bodybuilder (not to mention a staunch Republican!) was marrying a Kennedy (Shriver is the daughter of John F. Kennedy's sister Eunice), it seemed a little hard to believe. In true Camelot style, the two wed at a Catholic church near the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachussetts, with JFK's daughter Caroline serving as maid of honor. The couple had four children and remained married for 25 years.

Summer Olympic sports where men are barred from competing

The London Games are a celebration of equality. For the first time, women will compete in all 26 sports, including boxing. It's not total equality — women still compete in 30 fewer events than men — but it's part of a larger trend towards gender equity on sports' global stage.
So what happens if you're a male athlete that feels discriminated against, based on gender?
According to Belinda Goldsmith of Reuters, there are two sports in which men are shut out of competition in which women compete for medals:
